The science
☢ Fusion power
✓ Real todayFusion is how stars shine: light atoms join into heavier ones and release energy. On Earth we try to hold a gas hotter than the Sun's core with magnets (tokamaks) or crush fuel pellets with lasers.
- In 2022 the US National Ignition Facility got more fusion energy out of a target than the laser light put in — a world first.
- ITER, a giant tokamak in France, is being built by 35 countries.
- Fusion fuels include deuterium (found in seawater), tritium and helium-3.
